1968 Ford Mustang GT/CS California Special 289-4 with C-4 Select Shift Transmission. Candy Apple Red with Black Vinyl Bucket Seats, black interior and black Vinyl Roof. Chrome GT Wheels fitted with new Goodyear Eagle tyres.
Fully restored over the last 3 years and presented as a turn-key investment quality classic ready to drive and show. One of only a handful of genuine California Special's in the country and one of the few remaining worldwide. We believe the only genuine example currently offered for sale in the UK and if there are more we are not aware of them.
Built at San Jose on the 15th of February 1968 and came off the line with C-4 Select Shift Automatic Transmission, Tinted Glass, Deluxe Seat Belts, and chrome GT Rallye Wheels.During restoration the body was stripped to a bare shell and sandblasted to remove all traces of the old paint and any evidence of corrosion. After new floors were fitted it was painted in Ford Candy Apple Red, fitted with a new black vinyl roof and the complete refurbishment of the interior in all black. This is what you see today.
The original numbers matching engine was removed during restoration along with everything else and has been fully rebuilt to standard specification with the exception of a Holley 4-barrel carburetor and Summit inlet manifold, covering approximately 500 miles since. Custom made stainless steel headers and dual exhaust system were then added. The braking system and suspension has been renewed, new fuel tank fitted, the transmission overhauled, new bumpers fitted, new seat belts, new front seat covers, new carpeting and headlining and a new dash. The fitting of a new Mustang wood-rim and alloy steering wheel completes the interior.
The California Special with the distinctive rear quarters and trunk, rear lights and side scoops shared with the 67/68 Shelby’s and the front Lucas fog lamps is a desirable and rare classic Mustang. With a total production run of just 4118 it is not a common find in the States. The GT/CS Registry by Paul M Newitt lists just over 700 known survivors’ and 8R01C142780 is listed as one of them. The Registry comes with it along with a signed copy of the authors GT/California Special Recognition Guide and Owner’s Manual. Its own Deluxe Marti Report is also supplied along with a number of receipts and invoices.
This rare and very collectible Mustang is offered in outstanding restored condition and is a dream to drive and makes a great sound. Ready to use and enjoy and get along to its first show of the year where it is sure to be the center of attention.
