1956 Ford Thunderbird Convertible 312 V8 Auto, A superb example of Ford’s first-generation Thunderbird, finished in Raven Black with a red and white interior, black carpets and sitting on chrome wire wheels with wide whitewall tyres.
This example is fitted with the desirable 312ci Y-block V8, the higher-output engine offered for the 1956 Thunderbird, producing 225hp when paired with the Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission.
Professionally restored in the USA to a very high standard before arriving in the UK, the odometer currently shows approximately 96,000 miles, with around 3000 miles covered since completion of the restoration.
What makes this particular Thunderbird especially interesting is its specification and accompanying documentation. The history file includes its original Ford factory invoice, detailing how the car was ordered when new, together with its original-style 1956 Ford Thunderbird handbook and further supporting paperwork.
The factory invoice confirms an extensive specification including:
312ci V8
Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission
Master-Guide power steering
Swift-Sure power brakes
Power-Lift electric windows
4-way power adjustable seat
Tinted safety glass
MagicAire heater
Radio and antenna
Rear fender shields
Full wheel covers
White sidewall tyres
Safety package
For a car built in 1956, the level of equipment is remarkable. Power steering, power brakes, electric windows and a four-way electrically adjustable seat made the Thunderbird extremely advanced for its day and, even by modern standards, make it a remarkably easy classic to use and enjoy.
The car also comes complete with its matching Raven Black removable hardtop featuring the iconic Thunderbird porthole windows, together with a dedicated hardtop stand. Combined with the distinctive Continental-mounted spare wheel, chrome wire wheels and wide whitewall tyres, it’s everything you picture when you think of a 1950s Thunderbird.
Inside, the red and white interior provides a great contrast against the Raven Black bodywork, with the dashboard, brightwork and switchgear all presenting particularly well.
On the road, this has to be one of the best 1950s classics you will ever drive. The combination of the higher-output 312 V8, Ford-O-Matic transmission, power steering and power brakes gives you all the character and presence you’d expect from a genuine 50s American classic, without it feeling like hard work to drive.
A car we have had the pleasure of owning and supplying previously, and one we’re delighted to welcome back into stock. With its 312 V8, extensive factory specification, restored condition, porthole hardtop and accompanying original Ford documentation, it’s a superb example of one of America’s most recognizable 1950s classics.
