Few American classics are as instantly recognisable as the 1967 and 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback. More than half a century after they were built, they remain amongst the most desirable Mustangs in the UK and are still some of the cars we’re asked about most at Retro Classic Car.
For us, it’s easy to understand why. They look fantastic, sound exactly how an American classic should and offer a huge amount of choice when it comes to specification.
Iconic Fastback Styling
The Fastback body shape is a huge part of the appeal. The sweeping roofline, long bonnet and short rear deck give the 1967–68 Mustang a much more aggressive appearance than the Coupe, and it’s a shape that has aged incredibly well.
The 1968 Fastback also became one of the most famous movie cars of all time thanks to Steve McQueen and Bullitt. The Highland Green Mustang GT helped cement the Fastback’s place in motoring history and undoubtedly added to its appeal with collectors around the world.
From Small Block to Big Block V8s
There’s plenty of choice beneath the bonnet too. Small-block V8 Mustangs, including the 289 and 302, offer a great balance of performance, sound and everyday usability, while the big-block 390 gives you a completely different driving experience and remains particularly desirable.
We’re often asked which engine is the one to buy, but there isn’t really a wrong answer. Specification matters, but we would always put the overall quality and condition of the car first.
A beautifully restored small-block Fastback can be a far better car to own than a more desirable specification that needs considerable work.
Original, Restored or Restomod?
Another reason these Mustangs remain so popular is the variety available.
Some buyers want a factory-correct example, while others prefer a GT or Shelby GT350 homage. Restomods have also become increasingly popular, adding upgrades such as five-speed manual gearboxes, power steering, disc brakes, modern suspension and air conditioning.
It really comes down to what you want from the car and how you intend to use it.
Finding the Right Mustang Fastback
At Retro Classic Car, 1967 and 1968 Mustang Fastbacks have always been a big part of what we do. Adrian and Sam have bought and sold numerous examples over the years, from restored 289 V8 cars through to genuine 390 GTs, Shelby homages and high-quality restomods.
As with any classic, we believe condition should come first. Spending a little more to buy a properly restored, well-cared-for example will usually be money well spent.
